Two big weekends running in Kosciuszko 🙌

So honoured I could assist as a pacer for ethanborula on his incredible #coasttokosci achievement 💪💪 well done!

Also very stoked I got to complete the #kosci100 2024 despite the unpredictable weather conditions - not quite the time I hoped for but 20hrs 45 is still better than my last one! 😄

Wow. What a weekend.

It`s been a week and I still can`t wipe the smile off my face 😁

As I think I shouted somewhere between the Snowy River crossing and the National Parks office the way up to Perisher in the sunshine and mountain views, "HOW GOOD IS THIS RACE?"

Thank you to Greg and Mickey for inviting me to take part and believing I could finish.

Thank you to all the incredible people: race officials and volunteers, runners and crews who seemed like one big family.

Thank you to my crew (Xanthe, Adam, Mat and Rich) who redefined #bestcrewever and gave me everything I asked for, everything I needed but didn`t ask for, and knew exactly the right thing to say at any given moment.

The whole experience was one big highlight, but here are the best of the best moments:

- sunrise at the startline on the water. Having the welcome and blessing of the people who`ve walked this route for 60,000 years
- Soaking up the wisdom of some incredible people who`ve done it a few times between them. (I followed your advice as best I could, Brick. Promise!)
- Every time the breeze picked up and made me smile on Big Jack Mountain Road
- The stunning section between Bibbenluke and Gunningrah which holds a lot of beautiful moments and laughter from past years crewing
- The glorious downhill stretch out of Gunningrah to the base of the windmill climb
- My ongoing bafflement at the absence of windmills. Took too long to realise we could see them for hours on the approach two years ago because the moon was up.
- Playing games of "frog or spider" in the dark
- Venus, and the moonlight, and the stars.
- Dalgety. Such a great checkpoint. Good laughs, even better soup, and the kindest volunteers.
- Running a 100 mile PB of 22:04. (May have been aided by the story Adam and I entertained ourselves with about the zombies who came out of the voodoo dolls houses of Beloka in the night and chased us there.)
- Llamas at sunrise
- Just laughing every so often because "how good is this?"
- Deer just before the summit. Or were they goats? Glad Mat and Rich couldn`t tell either.
- The summit and the finish line feels 🥰 ...

This race is not about one “the runner” but about community and friendships

We could not do a race like this without the amazing support of our crew, and who else would one want but 3 of your best mates supporting and sharing the experience of running 240km

What an experience I had sharing great times pre race, during the race and celebrating afterwards

Have to send out a massive thank you to Darren McClellan who has without a question crewed me for all 5 of my runs at C2K and know he’ll be back for my next ones 😝🙏
And to my best mates Simone Hayes and Dan Symonds with Sim crewing me twice and Dan being available with John not running
Both I have had the privilege of representing Australia as Emu’s overseas in 24hr championships

The only place I can start when reflecting on C2K, thanking my absolutely incredible crew who I could not have done it without. They literally became my brains for the weekend as I passed all control over to them (not easy for a big control freak to do). They handled all my nutrition, fluids, pacing, carried my gear, kept my spirits up, and got me safely to the finish line.

ben_montet - the sensible and responsible member of the crew ensuring everything was running smoothly, even though he`s got his first Ironman in a few days. Turns out he is actually pretty smart and can do the speediest maths instantly working out distances, times, elevation and exactly how many carbs I had consumed as well as teaching me all there is to know about the night sky. He also put in the biggest stint of driving even on minimal sleep and still kept us all safe.

jake.kineta - for bringing all the vibes and energy constantly, I think he had the most fun out of everyone which always made me smile as well as giving the best hugs at just the right times. We shared probably my favourite and one of the most special moments of the race on the first night watching the moon rise, spotting shooting stars and listening to Harry Potter. He also took the most beautiful photos of the startline, ensuring I`ve got momentos of that special moment to treasure forever.

simonj.b - for being my superstar crew chief and literally the person who told me about this race. He put in the biggest stint pacing me, mainly up all the steepest hills at the hottest parts of the day. Probably why he had to put up with me crying the most too but always managed to distract me and make me laugh with his endless chatter. Also the only person to have probably got less sleep than me because he worked the whole night before and even took 1am work calls from the side of the road whilst the race was going on.

Who would have thought that one conversation at parkrun would`ve led to this. Let`s do it again in 2025?

And just like that, mtnbeard has a second pin in his akubra 🤠 I’m so proud of what you achieved over the weekend; your positive attitude, your constant smile (even when times were tough) and your ability to check in on your crew to make sure they were ok even though you were the one running a stupidly long distance. We had a bit more luck this year, your nutrition didn’t go out of the window early but instead we got a hot sun and with your ginger complexion made for an interesting few hours trying to keep you hydrated and cool. A beautiful blanket of clouds covered the sky and temperatures dropped bringing in a delicious night landscape. The stars were shining and you focused on your headlight. A quick pit stop in Dalgety where you asked to sit down, we stuffed you with some solid food and kicked you out of town before you got too comfortable. We started the Beloka hill ascent not long after and a solid couple of hours earlier than last year. I knew if you continued with this pace we would be in Jindabyne early too. The grind commenced towards Perisher and you took advantage of the cooler temperatures and put your afternoon hikes into practice. We changed your shoes, donned your mandatory gear and headed towards Kosciusko. You were sixth overall at this point and you thought you were moving slow. I tried to reassure you that you weren’t as we closed in on fifth place. You said you wouldn’t be able to run the return. We reached the summit and I actually thought I’d need to scrape you off. As we started our return to Charlotte Pass you picked up the pace and ran like I knew you would. We overtook fifth place with about seven kilometres to go. You continued to put time on him (about 25mins in the end). You ran into that Coast to Kosci finish banner and completed your 240km race from the beaches of Eden to the summit of Mt Kosciusko. You went from 13th last year to 5th this year. You beat your time by 3+ hours. You’re absolutely incredible and I’m so proud of you. Thank you for allowing me to join you again on this wild journey… is it too early to say you’re keen for a third pin? 😉

Coast to Kosci

I didn’t die!

This weekend I went for a little run with a lot of eating, a fair chunk of walking and a lot more vomiting than I intended.

245km from Eden NSW to the summit of Mt Kosciusko and returning to Charlotte Pass to finish.

So much to capture but basics are this:
1️⃣ 240km is a really long way
2️⃣ I was awake for 48hrs aside from 3 dirtnaps varying between 5-13 mins long each.
3️⃣ I vomited for 14hrs overnight and arrived at the 149km checkpoint (Dalgety) 4 mins before the cut off. Having never chased cut offs before, it is an utterly humbling experience that truly shows you your grit and shows you how much you can push.
4️⃣having a WhatsApp group filled with 60 people from around the globe was the most amazing experience. I cried reading all the messages of support and crazy ass questions that came through.
5️⃣this race is no joke. What Greg, Mickey and all the C2K staff, vollies and communities do for us to get us through to the end is incredible. They are the epitomy of selfless. Jane Trumper you are a legend and hold a very special place in my heart.
6️⃣crew are everything in this race. My girls sarahgrealy buddabynge and rigoni_peterson I have said it many times this weekend but there is absolutely no way I would have finished without you. You kept me smiling the whole way, even when I was vomiting. You gave up your lives for me, took time away from family, life and jobs for me and pushed me to that finish. It’s so humbling to know I have friends like this in my life and as I looked around at the start I felt the same for every runner there, we are one lucky community.
7️⃣the families of everyone who came away who held down the forts at home with work, kids, and life, thank you. I know what an impact it has on you and I am so grateful. mmgeraghty thank you for being the best dad and husband and not freaking out when I told you I’d been invited to run, even though I may have forgotten to tell you I’d applied!)
8️⃣ we can achieve absolutely anything. We just have to never give up.
9️⃣ we had the best car and playlist

So incredibly proud to have finished coasttokosci 2024. It was tough. had to dig deep and ride the rollercoaster of highs and lows that is ultra running. This is truly a special race and there is no where else I would want to be.

My heartfelt thanks to my amazing dream team grant_shermanator ppitstop23 what_cindy_sees_ for crewing me for a second time at Coast to Kosci. We learnt a lot from last year and learnt a whole lot more this year too. And that is why I do this - to challenge and push myself and be constantly learning what is possible.

Much appreciation to race directors Greg & Mickey and all the wonderful volunteers and support crew that make this race such an incredible experience.

Another epic weekend of coasttokosci in the books! It’s hard to put into words how special this race is and how inspiring all the runners are crews are.

pilley1 put on another master class of running, guts and determination (and not cleaning soft flasks 🤮) and did it all with a smile on his face and caring more about those around him than himself. 28hrs 22mins for 240km and 1hr faster than last year in really tough conditions - what a legend!

And getting to spend 5 days with the rest of the crew mandafrances , mcdonoughvic, steph_auston , cadence_888 and Stu making more memories we’ll never forget ♥️

Plus the advantage of Matt running a slightly more conservative start meant we got more time interacting with the other runners and crews - so many funny moments and highlights!

I also can’t fail to mention the two women Allie and Cassie that finished second and third overall - both breaking the previous course record! They were battling hard all day (and night and day) and it was so amazing and inspiring to watch unfold.

Fingers crossed someone gets accepted next year so we can do it all again 😊
